How to Join a Masonic Lodge
If you've ever been curious about Freemasonry, you're not alone. Maybe you've heard whispers of tradition, brotherhood, or charity—or perhaps you've simply walked past a Masonic Lodge and wondered what goes on inside. The good news is that Freemasonry is much more open and welcoming than many people realise. And if you’re based in Tamworth or the surrounding area, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

What is Freemasonry?
Before we discuss how to join, it’s worth understanding Freemasonry. It is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations. At its core, it is about self-improvement, supporting others, and forming strong bonds of friendship. It’s not a religion or a secret society, although it does have a few traditions and ceremonies that may seem mysterious to outsiders.

Who Can Join a Masonic Lodge?
In England, anyone 21 or over can apply to join Freemasonry — regardless of background, belief system, or career. You don’t need to be invited, and you don’t need to have family connections to Freemasonry. All that’s required is a genuine interest and a belief in a higher power (which could be religious or spiritual, depending on your views).

Men considering becoming a Freemason really break down into three categories
The first is a someone who is from a ‘Masonic’ family. Then there are those who have no family Masonic connection but know someone who is a Freemason. The third is a someone who would like to become a Freemason but knows no one who he can approach.
For someone, who has a family history of Freemasonry, the decision to become a Freemason is not so difficult. They have probably been connected with Freemasonry through close family or a relation. They may have possibly attended some Masonic social functions. So they are familiar with the ethos of Freemasonry. Therefore, for most of this group it is much easier to make a decision whether or not to become a Freemason.
Another group of may join Freemasonry either through an introduction to Masonry by a work or social friend.
Most men who join this way, when questioned why they asked to become a Freemason, said of the friend or colleague who introduced them to Freemasonry:
“I have known him for some time and recognise him to be an honourable person”
“I knew that he would not be a member of a group with questionable morals”.
“I trust his judgement”.
“If it’s good enough for him then I can see no reason why I should not join”.
Again this group have a natural connection into Freemasonry to which they can address their questions.
But it is the third group often say that they simply don’t know anyone who’s a Freemason, that they don’t know where to look or who to ask about it. Well in today’s world any man can ask to join, and as you read on, we’ll talk you through the process.
How Do You Join a Masonic Lodge?
The process is simple — and it always starts with a conversation.
1. Do Your Research
Take time to learn more about Freemasonry in general. The United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) and Staffordshire Freemasonry websites are great places to start. You’ll find answers to common questions, details about Masonic values, and what lodges do.
2. Reach Out to a Local Lodge
Once you're ready, you can contact a local Masonic lodge directly. If you're near us, you’re more than welcome to reach out to Marmion Lodge Tamworth. We’d love to hear from you, whether you’re just starting to explore or already know Freemasonry is for you.
3. Meet and Talk
After your initial enquiry, we’ll usually invite you for a friendly chat or visit one of our social events. It’s a chance for us to get to know you and for you to ask questions and meet some of the members. It’s not a test — just a conversation.
4. The Formal Application
If both sides feel it’s a good fit, you can formally apply. This includes a short interview and a ballot (vote) among Lodge members. If accepted, your journey into Freemasonry will begin with an initiation ceremony — an experience that many Masons remember for the rest of their lives.
What Happens After You Join?
Joining a Masonic Lodge is just the beginning. You’ll have the chance to attend regular Lodge meetings, participate in ceremonies, visit other Lodges (this includes local, national and international lodges who fall under the jurisdiction of, or are affiliated to, the United Grand Lodge of England) and enjoy social events and dinners with fellow members.
You can get as involved as much as you like — some members are very active, while others attend occasionally around work or family life.
